adventures abound

Well, we ended up changing plans a little yesterday. Instead of the pineapple fields, we just headed straight for the town of Lahaina... We walked around a bit and watched the sunset from the water. We forgot the camera, so I took this from my treo:

Today we started out early. We headed down to the Kihei boat landing to go snorkling in Molokini. The island of Molokini is a tiny crescent shaped island about 3 miles off the south side of Maui:

Inside the crescent, there is some great snorkeling.. The waters are relatively calm and there is tons of fish. Be careful! If you stray outside of the crater, you can be picked up by the currents and never heard from again, a la Open Water.

Once again, we forgot the camera (the underwater one) so you won't see some more up close pictures of Mary Anne and me with giant sea turtles. Funny too, he started taking a look at my ankle like it was lunch so I boogied on out of his way.

We also saw some whales, which was cool because whale-watching trips are like 50 bux per person. No, we werent snorkling when we saw them.. We were onboard, and we kept about 100 yards away from them.

I've noticed that this Maui stuff is *really* expensive. Really its just tourist gouging thats going down. An example is that Maui Gold Pineapples are 2.99 a piece at Costco. On the side of the street you will find ghetto fruit stands.. Now in San Diego, this is normally where you go to get the freshest fruits and vegetables at some great prices.... Here, the *same* Maui Gold pineapple goes for 10 bux. it's funny too, because the place is crowded with tourists that dont realize this.. I guess they dont even think about going to costco. These street vendors probably go to costco early in the morning to pick up their inventory and then make a nice 200% profit per unit. Not bad!

After snorkling we had lunch and took our afternoon nap. Then we went off to the town of Ma'alea (probably spelt wrong).

This town basically has nothing but Buzz's Whard (Mango creme Brulee place), some docks for boats, and a place called the Maui Ocean Center. We thought we would go check it out. 24 dollars is the entree fee and it's about 1/12th the size of sea world. What a ripoff! We got a nice picture out of it at least:

after that we decided to go on a little adventure. We went to a place called Iao Valley. It's a state park and was free (yes!). Awesome sights!

Pictures are worth a thousand words so here you go:

After Iao Valley, we went to the beaches on the North side of Maui. I'm not sure if this is actually *the* north shore, or just a local name for it. The waves were pretty abundant, and we saw a lot of surfers out.

See ya next time!
